California Helps Create Larger Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle Market
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) recently reduced the number of pure electric and fuel cell vehicles mandate in favor of producing thousands of plug-in hybrids. Though this decision was made in California, ten other states have adopted California’s emission laws so the effect is much more widespread. At this point you can’t even buy a plug-in hybrid, which makes this mandate even more astounding. The good news is California just created a big market for plug-in hybrids, but the bad news this was a the expense of cutting the production of electric vehicles by 70%.
Toyota, Honda, GM, Ford, Chrysler and Nissan will have 58,333 hybrids on the road in California by 2014. Along with the other states we should see bout 133,000 plug-in hybrids by 2014. Even though some automakers are already in the process of getting plug-in hybrids on the road, this mandate will require these manufactures to get this technology onto the road.
