Enterprise Rent-A-Car Opens “Green” Branches
Enterprise Rent-A-Car has slowly been purchasing more hybrids and other fuel efficient vehicles for their fleet. Enterprise, the nations largest rental car company, has started a bold effort in Atlanta, GA by opening up four “green” branches. About 60% of the cars at these branches will be hybrids or other fuel efficient vehicles. Analysts have cautioned that much of the hybrid demand could be the result of potential hybrid buyers looking for an extended test drive. Others wonder whether the $5-$15 premium that you pay for the hybrid, will outweigh the fuel savings you will receive. Currently Enterprise has about 4,000 hybrid vehicles in its fleet of 1.1 million. Other car rental companies are trying to follow in Enterprise’s footsteps to get hybrid cars into their fleets. Hertz plans to add 3,500 Prius hybrids by this summer and Avis currently offers about 2,500 hybrids in their fleet.
Hopefully the demand for rental hybrids will increase, and in turn the premium for a hybrids car rentals will cease to exist. When I’m on vacation I would rather spend my money on something besides gasoline so this seems to be a step in the right direction.

Demand for hybrid and low fuel consumption cars is most certainly increasing, with a number of large rental companies struggling to keep up with demand. What many fail to get right is that providing an “upgrade” to a big, juicy SUV is not the appropriate way to satisfy a customer who requests a hybrid when the company has no more available. This seems to be happening a great deal, however.
