Those are some awesome numbers there being stated let alone how amazing the car looks! I can almost guarantee that myself and most others will never be able to afford it. If it came with a decent price tag... they would be boasting that number too.

I have never been one for a Prius - but the new 2009 model looks kinda cute. The fact that it has great gas mileage is an obvious plus duirng these times.

I average 46 mpg. I have gotten as much as 55mpg. this car rides great and my wife loves it as the drivers seat jacks up and down. If they have improved the suspension on the prius and 94 mpg I will be looking at it hard.

Awesome. I hope it gets here fast! We need some relief from the skyrocketing price of gas. Thanks for the post.

I agree that the Prius could use some better styling, but for me the fact is if I can get close to 100mpg it would be such a cost savings that I would look at it more from a financial standpoint. Right now if I were to buy a new car while I would consider the financial impact, I would still take into account the styling of the car, but if I'm saving hundreds of dollars per month then it could look like a wheel barrel and I would still strongly consider purchasing it..

how is a Prius a death trap? I personally like them and giving the fact that they are greener than most, it's an excellent choice. What I probably dislike is the shape...needs to be more sexier.

How exactly are they doing this? A 50 mpg gain over the previous model is an amazing feat, there's got to be some breakthrough technology behind this.

I get about 38mpg from my car (non-hybrid) but to see something that can reduce my fuel by about 60% would be a heck of a saving - probably about £1600-£2000 a year. We're definitely looking to get a hybrid next and hopefully Toyota will improve the current Prius design which is not good...

One thing - are these figures for US gallons or UK gallons??

Cheers, Dan.

I agree with Keith, once we see anything close to 50 or better on the mpg's, I believe we will see a rush to buy them. I might just be the first since my suv is killing me.

With the cost of gas, I will definately jumb on this when it becomes available. I currently own a Mazda RX8, a sports car that only gets about 16mpg. The 2009 Prius looks pretty good and at 94MPG, will get it. I hope it got speed?

Bring on a 4 seater version with this kind of mpg will get me moving. Does anyone have an idea about the cost of one of the gas sippers in relation to others in the market.

Once you start pushing up to almost 100mpg I think the average consumer will start to take a hard look at purchasing hybrid cars. Right now I think a lot of people looks at hybrids and see only a marginal gain over their current cars in terms of mpg, but when they see they can increase their mpg by 75, we will really see the adoption of hybrid cars accelerate. I currently have a Camry Hybrid, but if the new Prius gets almost 100mpg then I will seriously consider trading my car in.

According to Road and Track, the 2009 Prius may actually be cheaper than the current model! They expect the base price to be about $21,000. The maintenance cost per year should be on par with any other conventional car.

That sounds incredible. I think that 94 miles a gallon sounds great to anyone out there. My question is how expensive is going going to be off the lot? How about for maintenance cost per year? Other than those issues the car looks great and the miles per gallon sounds like a dream!
